Here at Old Style Dating, we’re strong believers in keeping the magic of dating alive through traditional means. However, we also know that there are thousands of people out there that use the internet to find a date, and the way we communicate is entirely different. In the past, how you presented yourself in person was the first hurdle to overcome, but nowadays, it’s the first message you send that really sets the pace.
So to help you out, we’ve put together six tips to help you write up your first few messages to other members at Old Style Dating, or even other dating websites.
Put some thought into your greeting
The typical “hey” greeting is overused and doesn’t really receive a great response. Instead, put a bit of thought into your greetings and get a little creative. Take notes from their profile and personalize a greeting depending on the person you’re speaking to. Use a bit of humour and mix it into your greeting to catch their attention, and don’t be afraid to use compliments as long as they’re not too gaudy. Opening with a question is fine too, but make it easy to respond to and not require a paragraph back just to answer.
Use correct grammar and spelling
The way you type your messages is going to have a huge impact on the person you’re sending them to. If you’re using shortened words and abbreviations like “ur” or “yo” then you might give off the wrong impression. If you have to, make sure you put your message through a grammar checker!
Don’t engage in useless banter
You’re on an online dating site, not a chat room. Skip the useless banter and don’t engage in endless amounts of back and forth where you don’t get anywhere. Skip to the point and let them know what you want. If you’re interested in someone and want to date, then make that the point of your message.
Make suggestions for a date
You need to stir up some interest from your date. This means giving them some suggestions on where you could go on your first date. Remember to keep their interests in mind when making these suggestions. For instance, if they love animals, then perhaps going out to a zoo would make a wonderful first date. If they’ve expressed an interest in learning art or cooking, then classes could be a great way to break the ice, learn something together and show that you care about their passions and interests.
Wait for a reply
Don’t let the ratio of messages from you to your recipient go out of control. At most you should be sending and receiving messages at the same pace. Don’t overload the message history with just your own messages. The moment you see that your five messages are met with short single-line responses, you’re not going to have a good time. Don’t resist the urge to send multiple messages. Be patient and wait for a reply from your recipient!
