First dates are exciting opportunities for romance, but it can be tricky to know if you’re making the right impression. To give you one less thing to be nervous about, Steve Cochrane from premium clothing retailer Psyche, offers his advice for looking your best.

Congratulations! You’ve taken the plunge and secured that all important rendezvous with a special someone. Now, all you have to do is get to know your date and let them get to know you too.

This date is the perfect opportunity to make a great first — and hopefully lasting — impression, and finding the right clothes to wear can help you do just that. It’s important to look for an outfit that is comfortable, flattering, and indicative of your personality to give you the best chance at finding love. So, below I’ll be taking you through finding the perfect clothes to wear on a first date to help you look your best.

Stick to what you know

If we like the clothes we’re wearing, it can make us feel confident and ready to face anything, even a nerve-wracking first date. So, look for styles of clothing you already like to wear, or outfits that you’ve received compliments on before. It can boost your confidence to try something new, but you won’t appear confident and engaging if you aren’t comfortable in what you’re wearing, and it won’t hold up if you can’t keep the pretence going once the conversation starts. So, it’s much safer to stick to tried and tested methods of dressing.

That doesn’t mean your first date outfit has to be boring, though. Remember that we wear clothing to express ourselves and get across our personalities, not just to cover up our bodies. From pop culture references to designer logos, the motifs you choose to wear on your garments can also be used to demonstrate your interests and hobbies. It can even help break the ice if you wear an unusual accessory or print.

Use colour psychology

It’s generally agreed that the safest colour to wear on a first date is black. It’s universally flattering, inoffensive, and goes with anything, but it can also give little away about yourself which can be important on a first date.

If you fancy something a bit more colourful for your first impression, choose carefully because each colour has its pros and cons. Red, for example, has connotations of passion which means it can be a good option for a romantic rendezvous, but in some circumstances it can come across as aggressive. So, it’s a good idea to take the tone of the evening, the venue, and what you both want from the encounter to determine whether you should look for something less intense.

Another colour to consider is blue, which is among the most popular choices for both men and women. According to colour psychology, it denotes calmness, trust, and loyalty, which are great qualities in a potential long-term partner.

Consider the activity you’ll be doing

If you’re still stumped for ideas, focus on the date itself. The time, place, and activity you will be doing together will no doubt influence what you can and can’t wear, so take into account what you’ve arranged. Adventure dates, like hiking or water sports, will have their own set of rules for you to follow so half the decision making has been made for you. But you must make sure that your clothing and your footwear is appropriate for the activity you’ve agreed to do.

Day and evening dates like dinner or a movie can be a bit trickier to dress for because it’s difficult to gauge the formality of the event. In general, day dates are more casual so you can even wear jeans or a t-shirt if that’s what you prefer — just make sure that they’re neat, clean, and high enough quality to impress your date. Evening dates usually require a fancier outfit so opt for a dress, chinos, or a suit jacket to make sure you look the part.

The tips in this guide can help you look your best for your first date with that special someone. It’s important that you are comfortable enough to be yourself, so focus on what you feel good in and work from there.
